The Prophet ﷺ came to the graveyard and greeted those buried there, saying, "Peace be upon you, dwelling of a believing people. We will, Allah willing, join you soon."Then he said, "How I wish we could see our brothers."They said, "Messenger of Allah, are we not your brothers?"He replied, "You are my companions. My brothers are those who have not yet come, and I will arrive at the Pool before them to receive them."They asked, "Messenger of Allah, how will you recognize those of your community who have not yet come?"He said, "Tell me, if a man had horses with white blazes on their foreheads and white markings on their legs among horses that were entirely jet black, would he not recognize his own?"They said, "Of course."He said, "They will come on the Day of Resurrection with bright faces and bright limbs from the traces of ablution, and I will arrive at the Pool before them."Then he said, "Beware, Some men from among you will be driven away from my Pool just as a stray camel is driven off. I will call out to them, 'Come here!' But it will be said, 'They changed after you.' So I will say, 'Away with them, away with them.'"
حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا شعبة قال سمعت العلاء بن عبد الرحمن يحدث عن أبيه
عن النبي ﷺ أنه أتى إلى المقبرة فسلم على أهل المقبرة فقال سلام عليكم دار قوم مؤمنين وإنا إن شاء الله بكم لاحقون ثم قال وددت أنا قد رأينا إخواننا قال فقالوا يا رسول الله ألسنا بإخوانك قال بل أنتم أصحابي وإخواني الذين لم يأتوا بعد وأنا فرطهم على الحوض فقالوا يا رسول الله كيف تعرف من لم يأت من أمتك بعد قال أرأيت لو أن رجلا كان له خيل غر محجلة بين ظهراني خيل بهم دهم ألم يكن يعرفها قالوا بلى قال فإنهم يأتون يوم القيامة غرا محجلين من أثر الوضوء وأنا فرطهم على الحوض ثم قال ألا ليذادن رجال منكم عن حوضي كما يذاد البعير الضال أناديهم ألا هلم فيقال إنهم بدلوا بعدك فأقول سحقا سحقا
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It appears in Jami al-Masanid wal-Sunan 7:260, taken from this very passage. Ibn Majah 4306 also related it from Muhammad bin Bashshar, from Muhammad bin Jafar, the teacher of Ahmad here, with this same chain. At the end of his version it reads, "They have indeed changed things after you, and they have not stopped turning back on their heels..."Muslim related it, 1:86, through the route of Ismail bin Jafar, from Ala, from his father, from Abu Hurairah. Malik related it likewise in Muwatta, pages 28–30, from Ala. Nasai related it, 1:35–36, through the route of Malik. Bukhari related part of its meaning, 11:413–414, through other routes, from Abu Hurairah. See also 3639, 4351, and 7955.His saying, "and I am their forerunner at the Pool," the word "farat" (with fatha on the fa and the ra) refers to one who goes ahead of the people and precedes them in order to seek out water for them."Among horses that are dark and pure black" - the word "buhm" (with damma on the ba and sukun on the ha) is the plural of "bahim," which means an animal whose color is not mixed with any other color. And "duhm," on the same pattern, is the plural of "adham," meaning black."They will surely be driven away" means they will be expelled."Suhqan suhqan" (with damma on the sin and sukun on the ha) means "far away, far away." And "saheeq" means distant.
