The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are four practices from the days of ignorance that people will never abandon: boasting about lineage, wailing over the dead, attributing rainfall to the stars, and saying, 'One camel became mangy, so a hundred became mangy.' Who infected the first camel?"
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا المسعودي عن علقمة بن مرثد عن أبي الربيع
قال رسول الله ﷺ أربع من أمر الجاهلية لن يدعهن الناس التعيير في الأحساب والنياحة على الميت والأنواء وأجرب بعير فأجرب مائة من أجرب البعير الأول
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It appears in Jami al-Masanid wal-Sunan 7:429, taken from this location, and it will come again at 10821, from Abdullah bin Yazid, who is Muqri, from Masudi, with this same chain.Abu Dawud Tayalisi also narrated it, 2395, from Shubah and Masudi, both of them from Alqama bin Marthad, with it. Tirmidhi narrated it, 2:135, through the route of Tayalisi, from Shubah, and Masudi, and he said, this hadith is hasan.It will come again through the narration of Shubah at 9354 and 9873, and it will also come again through the narration of Sufyan Thawri from Alqama bin Marthad at 10883. Ibn Hibban narrated it in his Sahih, 3:79 [manuscript of Taqasim wal-Anwa], from the hadith of Zakwan from Abu Hurairah, in similar wording.Part of its meaning has already passed at 7550, from the hadith of Saeed Maqburi from Abu Hurairah, and we pointed to this there.
