The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Isa son of Maryam will descend, and he will kill the swine, abolish the cross, and the prayer will be gathered for him. Wealth will be given so abundantly that none will accept it, and he will abolish the land tax. He will descend at al-Rawha, and from there he will perform Hajj, or Umrah, or both together."Abu Hurairah then recited, "And there is none from the People of the Book but will surely believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them" [Nisa 4:159].Hanzala claimed that Abu Hurairah said, "He will believe in him before the death of Isa." I do not know whether all of this is the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ or something Abu Hurairah said himself.
Its chain is sahih. Sufyan is Ibn Husayn, as Ibn Kathir explained in the tafsir. Ibn Kathir transmitted the hadith in Jami al-Masanid 7:19, and in the tafsir 3:15, from this place in the Musnad. He then said in the tafsir, Ibn Abu Hatim likewise related it in the tafsir from his father, from Abu Musa Muhammad bin Muthanna, from Yazid bin Harun, from Sufyan bin Husayn, from Zuhri, with the same wording. Some of its meanings have already passed at 7267, 7271, 7665, 7667.As for his statement, "before his death, meaning Isa," he means that the pronoun in "his death" refers back to Isa, so this is an explanation of the pronoun. This is what is established in the three original manuscripts. In Jami al-Masanid and Ibn Kathir's tafsir, it reads "before the death of Isa," without mentioning the pronoun. On this reading it becomes an explanation of the meaning of the verse, rather than a citation of its wording followed by an explanation of that wording, though the matter comes to nearly the same thing. This is the correct meaning of the verse, namely that there is none among the People of the Book but will believe in Isa before the death of Isa, as Tabari stated at 6:16. This also refutes anyone who denies that Isa is still alive in heaven, that he did not die, and that Allah raised him up to Himself. It indicates that he will descend from heaven at the end of time, as is established by the many well attested hadiths on this matter. We have already pointed to this in the commentary on hadith 7267, and we referred to this hadith there as well.
