Yazid bin Kaysan reported,

I asked permission to enter upon Salim bin Abu Jaad while he was praying, and he said, "Subhan Allah," to signal me. When he had finished with the salam, he explained, "A man's way of granting permission while he is praying is to say, 'Subhan Allah,' and a woman's way is to clap."
