The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one endures the hardship and difficulty of Medina without my being an intercessor and a witness for him on the Day of Judgment," or he said, "a witness and an intercessor."
Its chain of transmission is sahih, despite what appears on its surface to be a break, since it is in reality connected. Salih bin Abu Salih Samman is the brother of Suhayl bin Abu Salih, and he is trustworthy. Ibn Main and others declared him trustworthy, and Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 2/2/280, 284-285 under the name Salih bin Zakwan and Salih bin Abu Salih. Ibn Abu Hatim also gave his biography in 2/1/400-401. Salih bin Abu Salih only narrates from his father and from Anas bin Malik. No narration from anyone else has been recorded for him. This very hadith he narrated only from his father, from Abu Hurairah, as will appear in the source citation. However, in the narration found here in the Musnad, the phrase "from his father" has been dropped in all three manuscripts, and likewise Ibn Kathir mentioned it in Jami al-Masanid 7:199 under its own heading, "Salih bin Abu Salih Samman, from him," meaning from Abu Hurairah. This indicates that it appeared this way in the copies of the Musnad that Ibn Kathir saw. Therefore I am inclined to think that this is an old copying error by the scribes, not a narration that contradicts all the other narrations, since if that were the case the memorizing scholars would have pointed it out. This hadith will appear in the Musnad at 8497, from Affan, from Wahib, from Hisham, that is, Ibn Urwa, from Salih bin Abu Salih Samman, from his father, from Abu Hurairah. Bukhari likewise narrated it in al-Kabir 2/2/284-285, in the biography of Salih, saying, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ, "Whoever bears patiently the hardships of Madinah, I will be a witness or an intercessor for him." Musa told this to us from Wahib, who heard it from Hisham bin Urwa, and Ibrahim bin Munzir followed him in narrating from Anas bin Iyad, from Hisham. Muslim likewise narrated it in 1:389 through Fadl bin Musa, "Hisham bin Urwa informed us, from Salih bin Abu Salih, from his father, from Abu Hurairah," mentioning it in the same way, by reference to the narration before it. Tirmidhi likewise narrated it in 4:275 through Fadl bin Musa, and Tirmidhi said, this is a hasan gharib hadith from this route. These are clear proofs that the hadith is the hadith of Salih from his father from Abu Hurairah. This is confirmed and supported by the following narration, the narration of Wahib from Hisham, even though Imam Ahmad did not mention the full chain of it, referring instead to this narration. For it will come, as we mentioned, at 8497, and it contains the addition "from his father." Bukhari likewise narrated it in al-Kabir, as we mentioned before. But despite all this documentation and certainty, I could not add to the chain of transmission when the manuscripts unanimously omit it, and knowledge is a trust. The meaning of this hadith has already appeared in the hadith of Saad bin Abu Waqqas at 1573, and in the hadith of Ibn Umar at 5935, 6001.
