The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever leaves behind wealth, it belongs to his family, and whoever leaves behind dependents in need, their care falls upon me."

قال رسول الله ﷺ من ترك مالا فلأهله ومن ترك ضياعا فإلي
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari narrated it, 5:45–46 and 12:42, through Abu Hazim from Abu Hurairah, with similar wording. He also narrated it, 5:46, at greater length, through Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Amra, from Abu Hurairah. He also narrated it at greater length, 12:6–7, through Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman from Abu Hurairah. Muslim likewise narrated it, 2:3–4, at length and in brief, through several routes from Abu Hurairah.As for his saying "diyaan", it is with the letter dad vowelled with fatha. Ibn Athir said, "diyaa means dependents. Its origin is a verbal noun from daaa, yadeeu, diyaan. The dependents are named by the verbal noun, just as one says, 'whoever dies leaving behind faqran,' meaning faqaraa (poor dependents). But if the dad is vowelled with kasra, it becomes the plural of daaia, like jaaia and jiyaa."
