The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever intends harm against its people," meaning Madinah, "Allah will dissolve him as salt dissolves in water."
Its isnad is sahih, but with a clear error found in it. All three original manuscripts here read, "Amr bin Hurayth told me, from Ibn Umara." This, in my certain judgment, is an old confusion introduced by the copyists, for among the narrators named Amr bin Hurayth there is none with whom this isnad would be sound. One of them is counted among the younger companions. Another may possibly be the same person as the first. A third was a man from Egypt from whom Ibn Jurayj did not narrate. A fourth is disputed in his status, indeed in his very identity, and is discussed in Tahdhib and Lisan Mizan. Then who is this "Ibn Umara"? How did they overlook him and leave him unidentified? It is then certain that this is a scribal corruption by the copyists, and that the correct reading is Amr bin Yahya bin Umara. This is confirmed by the fact that Muslim narrated this very hadith with this wording, 1:390, through the route of Hajjaj bin Muhammad, and through the route of Abdul-Razzaq, both of them from Ibn Jurayj, who said, "Amr bin Yahya bin Umara told me that he heard Qaraz, who was one of the companions of Abu Hurairah, claim that he heard Abu Hurairah..." and so on.This removes all doubt about the soundness of the isnad, and confirms the correct name of the narrator of the hadith. However, I did not permit myself to change what is established in the three original manuscripts, despite my certainty about the correctness of what I have concluded, as a precaution, until I find another manuscript of the Musnad supporting this.Amr bin Yahya bin Umara bin Abu Hasan Ansari Madani, his reliability was established previously at 4520 and 5402.Qaraz is Abu Abdullah Dinar Qaraz Khuzai Madani, his reliability was established previously at 1558. We add here that Ibn Abu Hatim also discussed him, 430/2/1.The meaning of this hadith comes again, through two other routes, from Abu Abdullah Qaraz, at 8075 and 8672. Its meaning has also come before, in a longer hadith at 1593, through the narration of Abu Abdullah Qaraz, from Saad bin Abu Waqqas and Abu Hurairah, and it will come again likewise at 8355. Something similar to it in brief form, as here, has come before at 1558, through the narration of Qaraz from Saad alone. The hadith has another isnad as well. Ibn Majah narrated it, 3114, from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, from Abdah bin Sulayman, from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurairah, with this wording, as a raised hadith. This isnad is sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs.
