The Prophet ﷺ instructed Fatimah , or Umm Salama
, to let her hem trail by a cubit.
حدثنا أبو كامل حدثنا حماد عن أبي المهزم
أن النبي ﷺ أمر فاطمة رضي الله عنها أو أم سلمة رضي الله عنها أن تجر الذيل ذراعا
Its chain of transmission is daif. Abu Muhazzim, with the mim vowelled with damma, the ha with fatha, and the doubled dhal-less zay with kasra, is very daif. His name is Yazid bin Sufyan. He is discussed in Tahdhib 12:249-250, where another opinion is also given, that his name is Abdul-Rahman. On that basis he is discussed under kunyas. I do not know who holds this opinion, for I have found it only with Dhahabi in Mizan 3:312, where he says, "He is better known by his kunya." Yet Dhahabi himself mentions him in Mushtabih 508 under the name Yazid, giving only this one view, and discusses him in Mizan under names, not under kunyas. Likewise, the earlier scholars who preceded him treated him under the name Yazid. Among them are Bukhari in Kabir 4/2/269 and in Duafa 37, Ibn Saad in Tabaqat 7/2/8, Ibn Abu Hatim in Jarh 4/2/239, Nasai in Duafa 32, Dulabi in Kuna wal-Asma 2:135, and Ibn Hibban in Kitab al-Majruhin, folio 243. He is daif, as we have mentioned.Bukhari said, "Shuba abandoned him." Nasai said, "His hadith is to be abandoned." Ibn Saad said, "Shuba used to weaken him."Muslim bin Ibrahim informed us, saying, I heard Shuba say, "I saw Abu Muhazzim lying about in the masjid of Thabit Bunani, such that if a man gave him a fils, he would narrate seventy hadiths to him." Ibn Abu Hatim likewise narrated this from his father, from Muslim bin Ibrahim, from Shuba. He also reported his being weakened by Ibn Main and by Abu Zura.Ibn Hibban said, "He was a shaykh for whom knowledge was not his craft, one of those who were prone to confusion and error in what they narrated. Since his narration frequently contradicted the reports of reliable narrators, he fell outside the bounds of reliability."The hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah 3582, through the route of Yazid bin Harun, from Hammad bin Salama, with this chain. Busiri, in his Zawaid, weakened it because of Abu Muhazzim. The meaning of the hadith in itself is sahih, its meaning having already been given, from the hadith of Ibn Umar, on several occasions.
