The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When you encounter them on a road, do not greet them first, and force them to its narrowest part."Zuhayr said, "I asked Suhayl, 'Do you mean the Jews and the Christians?'"He replied, "The polytheists."
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari related it in Adab al-Mufrad, p. 161, 162, as did Muslim, 2:175, and Abu Dawud, 388, all of them from the narration of Suhayl bin Abu Salih, with this isnad, similarly. It will also come again through many routes from the narration of Suhayl, 7606, 8542, 9724, 9921, 10810, and in most of these narrations it is made explicit that they are the Jews and Christians, and in some of them also that they are the polytheists. The sum of the narrations indicates that all of these are meant, and all of them are polytheists. See also 4563, 5938, 6589, 7061.
