The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The one who takes back his gift is like a dog that eats until it is full, then vomits, then returns to its vomit and eats it again."
حدثنا عبد الواحد عن عوف عن خلاس
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال مثل الذي يعود في عطيته كمثل الكلب يأكل حتى إذا شبع قاء ثم عاد في قيئه فأكله
Its isnad is sahih. Awf is Ibn Abu Jamila Hajari, known as Arabi. Khilas, with a kasra on the kha and a light lam, is Ibn Amr Hajari, whom we have already introduced several times, most recently at 7215. The hadith has already appeared in meaning, in longer and shorter forms, at 3734 and 7374, from the narration of Araj and from the narration of Ibn Sirin. As for this narration found here, the Hafiz referred to it in Fath al-Bari 4:304, and mentioned that it was narrated by Ahmad and Tahawi. It appears in Sharh Maani al-Athar of Tahawi 2:205, where he narrated it through Rawh bin Ubada from Awf with this same isnad. The name Awf appears in the printed copy of Fath al-Bari as "Awn" with a nun, but this is clearly a printing error.
