The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "My nation is excused for whatever passes through their minds or whispers within themselves, as long as they do not act upon it or speak of it."
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا مسعر عن قتادة عن زرارة بن أوفى
قال رسول الله ﷺ تجوز لأمتي عما حدثت في أنفسها أو وسوست به أنفسها ما لم تعمل به أو تكلم به
Its isnad is sahih. Masaar, with kasra on the meem, sukoon on the seen, fatha on the ain, and with raa, all of them undotted letters, is Ibn Kudam, with kasra on the kaf and a light (unshadowed) dal, whose biography was given earlier at 6527. Here in H and M it appears as "Masud," which is a clear error, for among those named "Masud" there is no one who could plausibly be confused with appearing in this isnad. We have corrected it based on K and based on the source references. The hadith will come again in similar form at 10243, narrated by Hisham and Masaar, at 9097, narrated by Hisham alone, at 9494 and 10140, narrated by Saeed bin Abu Aruba, and at 10368, narrated by Hammam, all of them from Qatada.Bukhari narrated it at 5:116 and 11:478, and Muslim at 1:47, both of them through Masaar from Qatada. Bukhari also narrated it at 9:345 through Hisham. Muslim narrated it at 1:47 through Abu Awana, through Ibn Abu Aruba, and through Hisham, and Ibn Majah narrated it at 2040 through Ibn Abu Aruba, all of them from Qatada, in similar wording.Suyuti indicated in Jami Saghir at 1704 that the rest of the compilers of the Sunan also narrated it.As for his saying "tujawazu li-ummati" (my nation is excused), with damma on the taa and the jeem, and a shaddah on the kasra-marked waw, in other narrations it appears as "Allah has pardoned." The meaning is the same. In Lisan, it is said, "Their saying, 'O Allah, tajawwaz anni' and 'tajaawaz anni' carry the same meaning... and Allah tajaawaza his sin, and tajaawaza and tajawwaza, according to Sirafi, means He did not hold him accountable for it."See what has come before in Musnad Ibn Abbas, 3071 and 3161.
