The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "An accepted Hajj has no reward except Paradise, and two Umras, or one Umra to the next, expiate the sins committed between them."
حدثنا سفيان حدثني سمي عن أبي صالح
قال رسول الله ﷺ الحج المبرور ليس له جزاء إلا الجنة والعمرتان أو العمرة إلى العمرة يكفر ما بينهما
Its isnad is sahih. Malik narrated it in Muwatta (346), from Sumayy, with this same isnad, but in his wording he mentioned Umrah before Hajj. Bukhari narrated it (3:476), and Muslim (1:382), by way of Malik. Muslim also narrated it again after that, by way of Sufyan, from Sumayy, but he did not give its wording, rather he referred back to Malik's version. The authors of the Sunan works narrated it as well, except Abu Dawud, as noted in Muntaqa (2313). The Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari, Ibn Abdul-Barr said, Sumayy alone transmitted this hadith, and people had need of it from him, so Malik, the two Sufyans, and others narrated it from him, to the point that Suhayl bin Abu Salih related it from Sumayy, from Abu Salih, as though Suhayl had not heard it from his own father, confirming that Sumayy alone transmitted it. So it is among the rare reports found within the Sahih.I say, the narration of Suhayl from Sumayy, which the Hafiz pointed to, was also narrated by Muslim. The meaning of "accepted" as applied to Hajj, Ibn Athir said, it is that which is not tainted by any sin. It was also said, it is that which is accepted and met with reward, meaning recompense. The Hafiz said, it occurs in Ahmad's Musnad and elsewhere, in a raised hadith of Jabir, "An accepted Hajj has no reward but Paradise." It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the goodness of Hajj?" He said, "Feeding people and spreading greetings of peace." This is the tafsir of what is meant by goodness in Hajj. This hadith of Jabir will come later in Musnad 14534. The Hafiz also referred to it earlier in Fath al-Bari (302), and mentioned that Hakim narrated it as well, then said, its isnad has some weakness, so if it were established, it would be the definitive interpretation, rather than any other.
