The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "My heirs shall not divide a single Dinar or dirham. Whatever I leave behind, after providing for my wives and the expenses of my workers, is charity."
حدثنا سفيان عن أبي الزناد عن الأعرج
قال رسول الله ﷺ لا تقتسم ورثتي دينارا ولا درهما ما تركت بعد نفقة نسائي ومئونة عاملي فهو صدقة
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Muslim narrated it, 2:55, from Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abu Umar Makki, from Ibn Uyayna, with this same chain. However, he did not mention its wording, but instead referred to the narration of Malik that preceded it. Malik narrated it in the Muwatta, 993, from Abu Zinad, with the wording, "My heirs shall not divide any dinars," without mentioning dirhams. Bukhari narrated it, 304:5 and 6:146, and 5:12. Muslim narrated it, 2:55, and Abu Dawud, 2974 [3:105 Awn al-Mabud], all of them through the route of Malik, with the wording "a dinar."The Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari 6:146, this is how it appears in Malik's narration from Abu Zinad in the Sahihayn. It has been suggested that this is a case of drawing attention to the greater matter by mentioning the lesser one. Muslim recorded it through the narration of Sufyan bin Uyayna from Abu Zinad, with the wording, "a dinar nor a dirham," and this is a good addition. Sufyan Thawri followed him in this, narrating from Abu Zinad, as found in Tirmidhi's Shamail.A response should be made to the Hafiz, noting that Muslim did not mention the wording of the hadith in Ibn Uyayna's narration, as we pointed out earlier, and its wording here is only found in the Musnad. Moreover, this addition, "nor a dirham," is also established in Bukhari in the first location, 304:5, in some of his manuscript copies, as found in the Sultani edition, 12:4, where it is established in the margin, marked with the symbol for Abu Dharr and Kashmihani. Qastallani likewise stated explicitly in his commentary, 22:5, that it is established in both of them. As for Tirmidhi's narration in the Shamail, it is as the Hafiz said, since he narrated it from Muhammad bin Bashshar, from Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi, from Sufyan, from Abu Zinad. See the commentary of Ali Qari, 2:286-287.Mughira bin Abdul-Rahman Asadi Hizami followed the two Sufyans in this addition, narrating from Abu Zinad. Ibn Saad narrated it in the Tabaqat, 2/2/85-86, from Khalid bin Mukhlad Bajali, from Mughira bin Abdul-Rahman, from Abu Zinad, with this wording. As for his saying "shall not divide," the Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari, 304:5, with the mim silent, it functions as a prohibition, and with the mim vowelled with damma, it functions as a negation, and this is the more well known reading. As for his saying, "and the maintenance of my worker," the Hafiz, 6:146, presented several opinions regarding its meaning, and the best of these opinions in explaining it is what Abu Dawud said in the Sunan, after narrating the hadith, "the maintenance of my worker" means the tillers of the land. Al-akara is with fatha vowels throughout, and Jawhari said it is the plural of akkar, as though it were the plural of aakir in form, meaning the cultivator.
