The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a man selling food and asked him how he was selling it. The man told him, and then it was revealed to him to put his hand into it. He put his hand in and found it to be wet.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever cheats is not one of us."
حدثنا سفيان عن العلاء عن أبيه
أن رسول الله ﷺ مر برجل يبيع طعاما فسأله كيف تبيع فأخبره فأوحي إليه أدخل يدك فيه فأدخل يده فإذا هو مبلول فقال رسول الله ﷺ ليس منا من غش
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Dawud also narrated it (3452, 287 Awn al-Mabud), from Ahmad bin Hanbal, with this same isnad. Ibn Majah narrated it (2224), from Hisham bin Ammar, and Ibn Jarud (274), from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Yazid, and Hakim (8-9) by way of Humaydi, all three of them from Sufyan from Ala, with this same isnad. Hakim said, "This is a sahih hadith meeting the standard of Muslim, though the two of them did not include it in this form." He also noted that Muhammad and Ismail, the two sons of Jafar bin Abu Kathir, narrated it from Ala. He then narrated it with its isnad, in similar wording, by way of Muhammad bin Jafar, then by way of Ismail bin Jafar, both of them from Ala. He then said, "Muslim did narrate the hadith of Suhayl from his father from Abu Hurairah, that the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whoever cheats us is not one of us,' but as for the detailed account given in these hadiths, the two of them did not include it. All of them are sahih meeting the standard of Muslim." Dhahabi agreed with him. But Hakim erred here and forgot, for Muslim did narrate the hadith of Suhayl from his father, just as Hakim himself stated (1:40). However, Muslim also narrated this hadith of Ala, in similar wording, through one of the routes by which Hakim narrated it, for he narrated it immediately after that from Yahya bin Ayub, Qutayba bin Saeed, and Ali bin Hajar, all three of them from Ismail bin Jafar from Ala. Hakim narrated this same route by way of Yahya bin Ayub and Ali bin Hajar, both of them from Ismail.As for his saying, "is not one of us," this was already discussed in the commentary on 2329, quoting from Tirmidhi, from Ibn Madini, from Yahya bin Saeed, who said, "Sufyan Thawri used to reject this interpretation of 'is not one of us,' saying, 'It means, is not like us.'" This wording contains something misleading. But Abu Dawud narrated it here, right after this hadith, in this form, "Hasan bin Sabbah related to us, from Yahya, who said, 'Sufyan disliked this interpretation of "is not one of us," meaning "is not like us."'"
