"Any prayer in which the Opening of the Book is not recited is deficient." He repeated, "It is deficient. It is deficient."Abu Hurairah said, and before that he had said, "My beloved, peace and blessings be upon him, said," then he continued, "Persian, recite the Opening of the Book, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that Allah said, 'I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant'," and once he said, "'and My servant shall have what he asks for. When he says, "Praise be to Allah, Lord of all the worlds" [Fatihah 1:2], Allah says, 'My servant has praised Me.' When he says, "The Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate" [Fatihah 1:3], Allah says, 'My servant has glorified Me,' or 'My servant has extolled Me.' When he says, "Master of the Day of Judgment" [Fatihah 1:4], Allah says, 'My servant has entrusted his affair to Me.' When he says, "You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help" [Fatihah 1:5], Allah says, 'This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall have what he asks for'," and once he said, "'what he asked Me for.' Then His servant asks Him, "Guide us to the straight path, the path of those whom You have favored, not of those who have incurred wrath, nor of those who have gone astray" [Fatihah 1:6–7]. Allah says, 'This is for My servant. You shall have what you asked for'," and once he said, "'and My servant shall have what he asked Me for'."
His isnad is sahih. Ala bin Abdul-Rahman bin Yaqub and his father, their reliability was already established at 7146. Here in manuscript H it appears as "Ala bin Abdul-Rahman from Yaqub," which is a printing error. The correct reading is "ibn Yaqub," as we have restored it, corrected from manuscripts L and M and from the reference sources.Muslim narrated this hadith (1:161) from Ishaq bin Rahwayh, from Sufyan bin Uyayna, with this isnad, in similar wording. The wording of Muslim's version, at the beginning of the hadith, is longer and clearer than the wording found here in the Musnad. I think that Imam Ahmad was somewhat unclear about the beginning of the hadith, or forgot it, so he was cautious and phrased it as follows, "Abu Hurairah said," and before that he said, "my beloved," indicating that he attributes the beginning of the hadith to the Prophet without stating so explicitly, since he had not heard it well when he received it, or forgot it when transmitting it. He said, "He said, 'O Farsi, recite the Fatihah.'"We mention here its beginning as found in Muslim, so that the wording of the hadith becomes clearly evident. From Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "Whoever performs a prayer in which he does not recite Umm Quran, it is khidaj" - three times - "incomplete." It was said to Abu Hurairah, "We are behind the imam?" He said, "Recite it to yourself." Then he related the hadith. And at the end of it he said, Sufyan said, "Ala bin Abdul-Rahman bin Yaqub narrated it to me. I went in to see him while he was ill in his house, and I myself asked him about it."Tirmidhi narrated it similarly (4:66) from Qutayba, from Abdul-Aziz Darawardi, from Ala, from his father, from Abu Hurairah. Then he said, "This hadith is hasan. Shuba, Ismail bin Jafar, and more than one other narrated from Ala bin Abdul-Rahman, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ, something similar to this hadith. Ibn Jurayj and Malik bin Anas narrated from Ala bin Abdul-Rahman, from Abu Saaib, the freed slave of Hisham bin Zahra, from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ, something similar to this. Ibn Abu Uways narrated from his father, from Ala bin Abdul-Rahman, who said, 'My father and Abu Saaib narrated to me, from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ, something similar to this.'"Muhammad bin Yahya and Yaqub bin Sufyan Farsi narrated this to us, they both said, Ibn Abu Uways narrated to us, from his father, from Ala bin Abdul-Rahman, who said, "My father and Abu Saaib, the freed slave of Hisham bin Zahra, narrated to me, and the two of them were companions of Abu Hurairah, from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, 'Whoever performs a prayer in which he does not recite Umm Quran, it is khidaj, incomplete.'" There is nothing more than this in the hadith of Ismail bin Abu Uways.I asked Abu Zura about this hadith, and he said, "Both hadiths are sahih," and he cited as evidence the hadith of Ibn Uways, from his father, from Ala.Malik's narration, which Tirmidhi referred to, is found in the Muwatta (84-85). It will come later in the Musnad at 9934, and it is found in Muslim (1:161), and in Abu Dawud, 821 [1:301-302], and Nasai, 1:144-145.The narration of Abu Uways, which Tirmidhi also referred to, was narrated by Muslim (1:161), through the route of Nadr bin Muhammad, from Abu Uways. Its meaning will come later, at length and in brief, at 7400, 7823-7825, 9900, 10201.See what has preceded in the Musnad of Abdullah bin Amr, 6903, 7016.See also the tafsir of Ibn Kathir, 1:24-25, where he mentioned it from the narration of Muslim, through the route of Ibn Uyayna, then referred to its sourcing and some of its routes.See also the tafsir of Tabari, edited by Ahmad Muhammad Shakir and Mahmud Muhammad Shakir, in the hadiths 221-223.Khidaj means deficiency, and its explanation was given in detail at 6901.
