Sufyan related, tracing it to the Prophet ﷺ, "The earth has been made for me a place of prayer and a means of purification."Sufyan said, "I believe it is from Saeed, from Abu Hurairah."
حدثنا سفيان عن الزهري
يبلغ به النبي ﷺ جعلت لي الأرض مسجدا وطهورا قال سفيان أراه عن سعيد عن أبي هريرة
Its isnad is sahih, despite the apparent disconnection in it, as we will explain, Allah willing. This hadith's isnad has an omission in manuscript H, which made it appear that it and the hadith after it were a single hadith. That is why we assigned them a single number when we numbered the Musnad at the start of our work on it. Then manuscript M turned out to agree with the printed edition in this omission. But we later found manuscript K to have it correctly, with the two hadiths given separate isnads. This resolved the difficulty regarding them, and we were compelled to separate them, giving the second one the same number repeated. The first hadith is, "The earth has been made for me a masjid and a means of purification." Ahmad narrated it from Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Zuhri [from Abu Hurairah], attributing it to the Prophet. The words "from Abu Hurairah" were omitted from H and M, but they are correctly present in K, so we added them from it. This apparently makes it a mursal narration, with a gap between Zuhri and Abu Hurairah, for Sufyan said after narrating it, "I think it is from Saeed, from Abu Hurairah." This means Ibn Uyayna forgot, but he considered it more likely that it was from Zuhri, from Saeed bin Musayab, from Abu Hurairah. If this were the only support, it would be a point of doubt regarding the soundness of the isnad. But the hadith is established from Abu Hurairah through a different isnad. Ibn Majah narrated it (1:103) through Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Hazim, and through Ismail bin Jafar, both of them from Ala, who is Ibn Abdul-Rahman bin Yaqub al-Huraqi, from his father, from Abu Hurairah. Muslim narrated it (1:147) through Ismail bin Jafar, from Ala, with this isnad, within a longer hadith beginning, "I have been favored over the prophets in six ways," among which he mentioned, "and the earth has been made for me a means of purification and a masjid." This will come later in the Musnad (9326) through the route of Ala.Then Muslim narrated after it, through Yunus, from Zuhri, from Saeed bin Musayab, from Abu Hurairah, marfu, some of these qualities, but did not mention among them the wording "and the earth has been made for me." It seems to me that it was Zuhri who was uncertain whether he had heard this phrase from Ibn Musayab, and that is why Muslim refrained from mentioning it in this isnad and the isnads that follow it, even though he mentioned it in full following the hadiths in which the earth was made a masjid, for it has no relevance to the chapter except through this meaning. In any case, the hadith is sahih from the narration of Abu Hurairah, and its meaning is established through the hadiths of many of the Companions. Hafiz Suyuti erred when he mentioned its wording separately in Jami Saghir (3594) and attributed it to Ibn Majah from the hadith of Abu Hurairah, then marked it with the symbol for daif, and Munawi, in his commentary, failed to note this. This was based on the apparent isnads of Ibn Majah, since he narrated it from two of his shaykhs, about whom there is criticism that does not affect it, and these two shaykhs narrated it to him, one of them from Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Hazim, and the other from Ismail bin Jafar, both of them from Ala. Suyuti and Munawi overlooked that the hadith is contained within a longer hadith in Sahih Muslim through this same route, as we have indicated. Muslim narrated it from three trustworthy shaykhs, from Ismail bin Jafar, and its meaning has already passed within the hadith of Abdullah bin Amr (7068). Its meaning will also come later from the hadith of Abu Hurairah, both at length and in brief. 9, 1052, 4703, 7397.7265m, Sufyan narrated to us, from Zuhri, from Saeed, from Abu Hurairah, as a report, "Hasten with your funeral bier. If the deceased was righteous, then you are advancing him toward something good, and if he was otherwise, then it is an evil you are casting off your necks." He also said another time, attributing it to the Prophet ﷺ, "Hasten with the funeral bier, for if it is righteous, it is good that you are bringing it forward to him."Sahih. (7265m) Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari narrated it (147–148), and Muslim (1:308), both through the route of Ibn Uyayna, with this isnad, similarly. The beginning of this hadith's isnad was omitted in the two copies of the Musnad, H and M. It is present in K, so we inserted it between brackets, since we were certain it was correct. The proof of that is that the two Shaykhs reported it with this isnad. If it had been dependent on the isnad before it, in which Sufyan doubted its connection, they would not have reported it through this route, Allah willing, just as they did not report the previous hadith, "The earth has been made for me," through this route in which there is doubt about its connection, despite its soundness being established through many other routes, as we explained earlier.Sufyan's second narration, "if it is righteous, it is good that you are bringing it forward to him," is established this way in the three original manuscripts. In a marginal copy of K, it reads "you are bringing it." Bukhari's narration is, "if it is righteous, then it is good that you are bringing it forward to him." Muslim's narration is, "then it is good that you are bringing it forward over him."It will also come later at 7269, 7270, 7597, 7760, 7761, 10327.
