The prayer was called and the people formed their rows. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and took his place, then gestured to them with his hand to stay where they were. He then went back, and when he returned he had bathed, with water still dripping from his head, and he led them in prayer.
حدثنا الوليد حدثنا الأوزاعي حدثني الزهري عن أبي سلمة
أقيمت الصلاة وصف الناس صفوفهم وخرج رسول الله ﷺ فقام مقامه ثم أومأ إليهم بيده أن مكانكم فخرج وقد اغتسل ورأسه ينطف فصلى بهم
Its isnad is sahih. Muslim related it, 1:168, from Zuhayr bin Harb from Walid bin Muslim, with this isnad. Abu Dawud related it, 235-1:94 in Awn al-Mabud, and Nasai, 1:128, with several chains, by way of Walid bin Muslim from Uzai, and by other paths from Zuhri. Bukhari related it, 2:102, by way of Muhammad bin Yusuf from Uzai. He also related it, 1:329 and 2:101, with two other isnads from Zuhri. Something similar in meaning has already occurred in the hadith of Ali bin Abu Talib, 668, 669, 777.Yantufu, with the dhamma or kasra on the ta, means it drips.
