The Prophet ﷺ said, "None of you will be saved by his deeds."They asked, "Not even you, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "Not even me, unless my Lord envelops me with forgiveness and mercy. Not even me, unless my Lord envelops me with forgiveness and mercy from Him." He repeated this two or three times.
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Muslim related it, 1:347, from Muhammad bin Muthanna, from Ibn Abu Adi, with this same chain. He also related it before and after this, in similar wording, through multiple routes from Abu Hurairah. Bukhari related it in similar wording but at greater length, through two other routes from Abu Hurairah, 10:109-110, and 11:252-255. Its meaning is also established through the hadith of Ayesha, in Bukhari 11:256, and Muslim 1:347-348. See also Targheeb wa Tarheeb 4:200.As for his saying, "my Lord envelops me in forgiveness," Ibn Athir said, this means He clothes me in it and covers me with it, taken from the ghimd of the sword, which is its sheath. One says, "ghamadtu the sword" and "aghmadtuhu," meaning I sheathed it.
