I asked him, "What is the worst treatment you ever saw Quraysh inflict on the Messenger of Allah during the time they were openly showing their hostility to him?"He replied, "I was present with them one day when their chiefs had gathered in the Hijr and began speaking about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said, 'We have never endured from anyone what we have endured from this man. He has called our judgment foolish, insulted our forefathers, found fault with our religion, split our community, and reviled our gods. We have borne a grave thing from him,' or words to that effect. While they were talking like this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ suddenly appeared. He came walking toward them, touched the corner of the Kaabah, then passed by them as he circled the House. As he passed, they taunted him with some of the things he had been saying, and I saw the effect of it in his face. He went on. When he passed them a second time, they taunted him in the same way, and again I saw it in his face. He went on. When he passed them a third time and they taunted him again, he said, 'Listen to me, people of Quraysh. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have come to you with slaughter.'His words seized hold of them, so that not one of them was left unshaken, as still as if a bird had settled on his head. Even the man who had been fiercest against him before now tried to smooth things over with the kindest words he could find, saying, 'Go your way, Abu Qasim, go rightly guided. By Allah, you were never a foolish man.'So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed. The next day they gathered again in the Hijr and I was with them. They said to one another, 'You spoke of all he has done to you and all you have heard from him, yet when he confronted you face to face with what you hate, you let him be.'While they were saying this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared. They sprang at him as one man and surrounded him, saying, 'Are you the one who says such and such?' referring to what had reached them of his criticism of their gods and their religion. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ answered, 'Yes, I am the one who says that.'I saw one of them seize him by the gathered folds of his cloak, and Abu Bakr the truthful, may Allah exalted be pleased with him, stood in front of him weeping and saying, "Would you kill a man merely for saying, 'My Lord is Allah'?" [Ghafir 40:28]. Then they left him alone. That was the harshest thing I ever saw Quraysh do to him."
