Abdullah bin Amr bin As reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave a ruling concerning a man who had stabbed another man in the leg with a horn. The injured man came and said, "Messenger of Allah, grant me retaliation."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Do not be hasty. Wait until your wound heals."But the man refused and insisted on retaliation, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted him retaliation against the offender. The one who took retaliation ended up with a limp, while the one against whom retaliation was taken recovered fully. The man who had taken retaliation came back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have been left with a limp while my opponent has recovered."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Did I not order you not to seek retaliation until your wound had healed? You disobeyed me, so may Allah keep you far from His mercy, and your wound goes uncompensated."After the case of the man who was left with a limp, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that anyone with a wound must not seek retaliation until his injury had healed, and only once his injury had healed could he seek retaliation.
