A man came to Abdullah bin Umar and said, "I am only asking you about what you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I am not asking you about the Torah."He replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe.'"
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Saad is al-Azdi. Bukhari mentioned him in his book on kunyas, number 317, saying, "Abu Saad al-Azdi, from Ibn Amr, narrated from by Amash." Husayni mentioned him in al-Ikmal, pages 128-129, under the name Abu Saeed al-Azdi, and said, "Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators." Hafiz mentioned him in al-Tajil, page 487, saying, "Abu Saad al-Azdi, also said to be Abu Saeed, from Abdullah bin Amr, the hadith, 'The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe,' narrated from by Amash and Abu Ishaq [meaning Subayi]. Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators and said, 'His hadith is among the Kufans.'" Abu Dawud also recorded, for Abu Saeed al-Azdi from Abu Hurairah, a hadith, and Ibn Hibban also mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators, saying, "He was a Levantine whose hadith is among the Basrans." This is a different person from Abu Saad al-Azdi, the narrator from Zayd bin Arqam found in Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah. In my view, what Husayni stated, that his name was Abu Saeed, and what Hafiz presented as a separate opinion, as we have related, is simply the result of an error in some copies of al-Musnad. For the narrator is Abu Saad and no other. This is how Bukhari recorded him, as we have related, and this is what is established here in the three original manuscripts of al-Musnad. In fact, the mark of correctness (sahh) was written over it in manuscript M, and a note was written in its margin reading, "another copy has, 'from Abu Saeed.'" It was from this marginal variant, or one like it, that Husayni took his information, and Hafiz followed him in presenting it as a separate opinion. This hadith will come again at number 6953, through the narration of Ammar bin Raziq from Amash from Abu Saad from Abdullah bin Amr from him, with the addition, "and the emigrant is the one who abandons what Allah has forbidden." The wording of the elevated hadith is sahih, coming from the hadith of Abdullah bin Amr, and has appeared before and will appear again through many routes with the same meaning, at greater or lesser length, at numbers 6515, 6806, 6835, 6836, 6912, 6925, 6955, 6982, 6983, and 7017.
