I went in to see Abdullah bin Amr bin As, and he questioned me, thinking I belonged to Umm Kulthum the daughter of Uqba. I said, "I actually belong to the Kalbi woman."Abdullah then said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to me at my house and asked, 'Have I not been told that you recite the Quran every day and night? Recite it once a month.'I said, 'I am able to do more than that.'He said, 'Then recite it every two weeks.'I said, 'I am able to do more than that.'He said, 'Then recite it every seven days, and do not exceed that. And I have been told that you fast continuously.'I said, 'I do indeed fast continuously, Messenger of Allah.'He said, 'Fast three days of every month.'I said, 'I am able to do more than that.'He said, 'Then fast two days every week.'I said, 'I am able to do more than that.'He said, 'Then fast the fast of Dawud. Fast one day and break the next, for that is the most balanced fast in the sight of Allah.' And he never broke a promise when he made one, nor did he flee when he met the enemy."

دخلت على عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص فسألني وهو يظن أني لأم كلثوم ابنة عقبة فقلت إنما أنا للكلبية قال فقال عبد الله دخل علي رسول الله ﷺ بيتي فقال ألم أخبر أنك تقرأ القرآن في كل يوم وليلة فاقرأه في كل شهر قلت إني أقوى على أكثر من ذلك قال فاقرأه في نصف كل شهر قال قلت إني أقوى على أكثر من ذلك قال فاقرأه في كل سبع لا تزيدن وبلغني أنك تصوم الدهر قال قلت إني لأصومه يا رسول الله قال فصم من كل شهر ثلاثة أيام قال قلت إني أقوى على أكثر من ذلك قال فصم من كل جمعة يومين قال قلت إني أقوى على أكثر من ذلك قال فصم صيام داود صم يوما وأفطر يوما فإنه أعدل الصيام عند الله وكان لا يخلف إذا وعد ولا يفر إذا لاقى
