The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Abdullah bin Amr, I have been told that you fast all day and stand in prayer all night. Do not do that, for your body has a right over you, your wife has a right over you, and your eyes have a right over you. Break your fast and fast as well. Fast three days of every month, and that will count as fasting the entire year."I said, "Messenger of Allah, I have the strength for more."He said, "Then fast the fast of Dawud. Fast one day and break your fast the next."Abdullah used to say, "How I wish I had accepted the lighter option."
Its isnad is sahih. It has already appeared slightly longer than this at 6832, through the narration of Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi and Affan, both from Salim bin Hayan. See also 6843, which is one of the narrations of the longer story at 6477, to which we referred there.
