The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It has reached me that you..."My father said, Affan also narrated this to us. He said, Salim bin Hayan narrated to us, Saeed bin Mina narrated to us, I heard Abdullah bin Amr say, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "It has reached me that you fast all day and stand in prayer all night. Do not do that, for your body has a right over you, your eye has a right over you, and your wife has a right over you. Fast three days of every month, for that is equivalent to fasting the entire year."I said, "I have the strength for more."He said, "Then fast the fast of Dawud. Fast one day and break your fast the next."Ibn Amr used to say, "If only I had taken the concession."Affan and Bahz said in their narration, "I find I have the strength for more."
Its chains of transmission are all sahih. Ahmad narrated it from Ibn Mahdi and from Affan, and at the end from Bahz, all three of them from Salim bin Hayan.Salim bin Hayan, with a fatha on the plain sin and a fatha on the plain ha with a doubled ya, was previously established as reliable at 1491, and we add here that Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 2/2/214, and mentioned that he heard from Saeed bin Mina.Saeed bin Mina, with a kasra on the mim and a long vowel, was a trustworthy successor. Ibn Main, Abu Hatim, and others confirmed his reliability, and Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 2/1/469, and mentioned that he heard from Jabir bin Abdullah and Abu Hurairah. This hadith is one of the narrations of the lengthy story of Abdullah bin Amr that appeared earlier at 6477, and we referred to it there. It will come again by this same route at 6862, from Affan from Salim bin Hayan. See also 6766 and 6789.Muslim narrated it, 1:321, by way of Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi from Salim, with this same chain of transmission.Ibn Saad narrated it in al-Tabaqat, 4/2/9, from Affan, but an error occurred in it, with a gap in the chain. It reads there, "Affan bin Muslim informed us, he said, Sulayman bin Hayan informed us, he said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me." This is a clear error by the copyists. The correct reading is "Salim bin Hayan, from Saeed bin Mina, I heard Abdullah bin Amr," and so on, as is obvious.
