One day I went early to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. While we were sitting, two men disagreed about a verse, and their voices grew loud. He said, "The nations before you were destroyed only because of their disputes over the Scripture."

Its isnad is sahih. Abu Imran Jawni is Abdul-Malik bin Habib, whose reliability was already established at 707. Abdullah bin Rabah Ansari is a trustworthy taabi, whose biography Ibn Saad recorded in Tabaqat 7/1/145, narrating from Khalid bin Samir Sadusi, who said, "Abdullah bin Rabah Ansari came to us in Basra, and the Ansar considered him learned." His name appears in the Bulaq printing of Sahih Muslim 2:304 as Abdullah bin Abu Rabah, which is a printing error, and it is correctly given in the Astana printing 8:57.The hadith was narrated by Muslim, as we have indicated, from Fudayl bin Husayn, from Hammad bin Zayd, with this same chain. Ibn Kathir quoted it in his tafsir 2:522 from this very place, then said, "Muslim and Nasai narrated it." See also 6668, 6702, 6741.As for his statement "hajjart" with the jeem doubled, it means "I went early." Ibn Athir said, "Tahjeer means going early to something and hastening to it... it is a Hijazi usage. The original meaning of tahjeer is traveling during the hajirah, which is the time of intense heat at midday."
