I was sitting with him in the shade of the Kaabah while he was speaking to the people. He said, "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and we made camp at a certain place. Some of us were pitching tents, some were tending to their livestock, and some were practicing archery, when the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced, 'The prayer is to be held in congregation.'"He said, "So I came to him while he was addressing the people, saying, 'People, there has never been a prophet before me except that it was his duty to guide his community to what he knew was best for them and to warn them against what he knew was harmful to them. Indeed, the well-being of this community lies in its earliest part, and its later part will be afflicted with trials and tribulations, each one making the previous seem mild. A trial will come, and the believer will say, "This is my ruin." Then it will pass. Then another will come, and he will say, "This one, this one." Then another will come, and he will say, "This one, this one." Then it will pass. So whoever wishes to be saved from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, let his death come upon him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and let him treat people the way he would wish to be treated. Whoever pledges allegiance to a leader, giving him the clasp of his hand and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him if he is able.'" And once he said, "as much as he is able."When I heard this, I pushed my head between two men and said, "But your cousin Muawiya orders us to do such and such."He placed his fist on his forehead, then lowered his head, then raised it and said, "Obey him in obedience to Allah, and disobey him in disobedience to Allah."I asked him, "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ yourself?"He replied, "Yes. My ears heard it and my heart retained it."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It has already appeared, slightly longer than this, at 6503, from Abu Muawiya, from Amash, with this same chain of transmission. This narration of Waki was related by Bayhaqi in Sunan al-Kubra 8/169 from the Musnad, from Qatii, from Abdullah bin Ahmad, from his father, from Waki. Muslim also related it at 2/88 from three teachers, from Waki. His words at the beginning of the hadith, "narrating to the people, he said," appear in a copy in the margin of M as "he says" instead of "he said."His words, "I said, 'But your cousin...'" appear in H as "and I said," though the "and" is not found in K or M.His words, "But your cousin commands us," omit the object of the command in this narration, though it is affirmed in the earlier narration at 6503, that he commands them to consume their wealth unlawfully and to kill themselves, and so on.His words, "He placed his fist on his forehead," use the term al-jam, meaning "that which is gathered" (with a damma on the jim and a sukun on the mim), referring to the gathering of his palm, which is to bring the fingers together and press them close.
