The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge from knowledge that does not benefit, a supplication that is not heard, a heart that does not feel humble, and a soul that is never satisfied.
Its isnad is sahih. Abdul-Rahman is Ibn Mahdi. Sufyan is Thawri. Abu Sinan, with a kasra on the seen and the first noon unshaddadated, is Abu Sinan Shaybani the elder, whose name is Darrar bin Mura. Darrar, with a kasra on the daad and the first raa unshaddadated, was already confirmed as reliable at 1164, and we add here that he was deemed trustworthy by Ahmad, Yahya Qattan, Ibn Saad, Nasai, and others. Ajli said, "Trustworthy, firmly established in hadith, once a man of sunnah." Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 2/2/340.Abdullah bin Abu Huzayl Anazi was a senior successor, whose reliability was already confirmed at 689, and we add here that his hearing from Umar bin Khattab is established, and he narrated from many companions. Ibn Saad gave his biography in al-Tabaqat 6:78–79, and Abu Naeem in al-Hilya 358–364.The hadith was narrated by Abu Naeem in al-Hilya 4:362, taking this passage together with the Musnad, from Qatii from Abdullah bin Ahmad from his father, with this isnad, and he said, "Gharib from the hadith of Thawri from Abu Sinan, Abdul-Rahman narrated it alone." Then he pointed to the coming narration 6561. He also narrated it at 5:93, taking this passage with this isnad from the Musnad. In al-Hilya, in the first place, it appears as "Abdul-Rahman bin Amr," which is undoubtedly an error, its correct form being Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi, for there is no one among the teachers of Ahmad, nor in this generation as far as we know, named Abdul-Rahman bin Amr. I consider it most likely a printing error, if not the mistake of some copyist. And it is correctly established as Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi in the second place in al-Hilya 5:93.Nasai narrated it at 2:313 from Yazid bin Sinan from Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi, with this isnad. Hakim narrated it in al-Mustadrak 1:354 by way of Qabisa bin Uqba from Sufyan Thawri, with this isnad. This refutes Abu Naeem's claim that Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi narrated it alone from Thawri.Tirmidhi narrated it at 4:254 by another route, by way of Amash from Amr bin Mura from Abdullah bin Harith from Zuhayr bin Aqmar from Abdullah bin Amr, as a raised hadith with similar wording. Tirmidhi said, "A hasan sahih hadith, gharib by this route."It will come at greater length at 6561 with another isnad, from Ibn Abu Huzayl from an unnamed sheikh from Abdullah bin Amr. We will explain there, Allah willing, that this does not undermine the isnad found in this passage.
