I heard a man say to Abdullah bin Amr, "You claim that the Hour will come at such and such a time."Abdullah replied, "I have half a mind not to tell you anything at all. All I said was that before long you would see a momentous thing happen." He meant the burning of the House. Shuba said, "This, or something like it."Then Abdullah bin Amr said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Dajjal will emerge among my nation and remain among them for forty." I do not know whether he said forty days, forty years, forty nights, or forty months. "Then Allah will send Isa the son of Maryam ﷺ, who resembles Urwa bin Masud Thaqafi. He will appear and destroy him. Then people will live for seven years after that, with no enmity between any two of them. Then Allah will send a cold wind from the direction of Syria, and no one who has in his heart so much as the weight of an atom of faith will remain. It will take every one of them, even if one of them were inside the very heart of a mountain, it would reach him there." Abdullah said, "I heard this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.""There will remain only the worst of people, as frivolous as birds and as savage in temperament as wild beasts. They will not recognize any good nor condemn any evil. Then Satan will appear to them in visible form and say, 'Will you not respond?' He will command them to set up idols, and they will worship them, while all the while their provisions flow freely and their lives are comfortable. Then the Horn will be blown, and no one will hear it without turning his ear toward it. The first to hear it will be a man mending his watering trough, and he will fall dead. Then no one will remain who has not fallen dead. Then Allah will send down rain like dew," or he said "like shade," Numan being the one uncertain, "and from it the bodies of the people will grow. Then it will be blown a second time, and there they will be, standing and looking about. Then it will be said, 'People, come forward to your Lord.'" And, "Detain them, for they are to be questioned" [Saffat 37:24]."Then it will be said, 'Bring out the contingent of the Fire.' It will be asked, 'How many?' And the answer will be, 'Out of every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine.' That is the Day that will turn children grey, and that is the Day when the shin will be laid bare."Muhammad bin Jafar said, "Shuba narrated this hadith to me several times, and I recited it back to him."
Its isnad is sahih. Numan bin Salim Taifi is a trustworthy successor (tabii), whom Ibn Main, Abu Hatim, and others rated as reliable, and Bukhari mentioned him in al-Kabir 2/4/77. Yaqub bin Asim bin Urwa bin Masud Thaqafi is a trustworthy successor, whom Ibn Hibban listed among the reliable narrators, and Bukhari mentioned him in al-Kabir 2/4/388–389.Muslim narrated this hadith, 2/378–379, from Ubaydullah bin Muaz Anbari, from his father, from Shuba, with similar wording. Then he narrated it from Muhammad bin Bashshar, from Muhammad bin Jafar, the teacher of Ahmad here, from Shuba, but he did not give its wording in full, instead referring back to the narration of Muaz that preceded it. Ibn Kathir quoted it in his tafsir, 7/266, from this same passage in the Musnad, then said, "Muslim alone narrated it in his Sahih."His words "then people will remain" appear in H as "will wear" with a sin, which is a clear printing error. His words "in the belly of a mountain" are with fatha on the kaf and kasra on the ba, meaning its middle and interior, for the "belly" of anything is its middle. His words "the flightiness of birds" refer to their restlessness and their startling at the slightest suspicion, likening the condition of the wicked, in their recklessness, lack of dignity, disordered judgment, and inclination toward immorality and corruption, to the condition of birds."The minds of beasts" means their deficient intellects, being a plural of hilm with damma, or a plural of hilm with kasra, containing an allusion to the fact that they are devoid of knowledge and forbearance, and that what dominates them instead is recklessness, anger, savagery, destructiveness, ruinousness, and lack of mercy, as stated in al-Mirqat (volume 2, folio 484).Nawawi said in his commentary on Muslim, 18/76, "The scholars said, its meaning is that they will be swift toward evil, the fulfillment of desires, and corruption, like the flight of birds, and in aggression and mutual oppression they will resemble the character of predatory beasts."His words "he plasters his pool" mean he coats it with clay and repairs it. His words "as though it were tall or zill" the first is with fatha on the plain ta, meaning light rain, and the second is with kasra on the dotted za. Qadi Iyad said in al-Mashariq 1/319, "The more correct reading here is the first word, because of what is said in the other hadith, 'like the semen of men.'" Nawawi followed him in this. The word "grey-haired" was mistakenly dropped from H, and we have restored it from K and M.
