Its isnad is sahih. In its original form, it is part of the lengthy hadith that has already passed under number 6477, where part of its meaning was also given, namely the fasting of Dawud.As for this particular isnad and wording, Tirmidhi related it (62:2) from Hannad from Waki, with this isnad and wording, and Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith." Abu Abbas is the blind poet, whose name was Saaib bin Faruq. Some scholars of knowledge said, "The best fasting is to fast one day and break the fast the next day," and it is also said that this is the hardest form of fasting.Bukhari related it (192:4-193 and 6:327), as did Muslim (1:320), Nasai (326:1), Tayalisi (2255), and Ibn Saad (9/2/4). All of them related it as part of a lengthy hadith, with variations in their wording, from the hadith of Abu Abbas from Abdullah bin Amr. See also 6537.
