The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Jibreel kept urging me to be good to my neighbor until I thought he would make him an heir."
حدثنا سفيان عن داود يعني ابن شابور وبشير أبي إسماعيل
قال رسول الله ﷺ ما زال جبريل يوصيني بالجار حتى ظننت أنه سيورثه
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Sufyan is Ibn Uyayna, and Dawud bin Shabur, with the dotted "sheen," al-Makki, is trustworthy. Shafii, Ibn Main, Abu Zura, and others authenticated him. Bukhari mentioned him in al-Kabir 1/2/213, stating explicitly that he heard from Mujahid, and that Ibn Uyayna heard from him. Bashir Abu Ismail is Bashir bin Salman al-Kindi, Abu Ismail al-Kufi, whose authentication has already been given at 3696.An error occurred in the original manuscripts here, where it reads, "Bashir bin Ismail, from Abdullah bin Amr," which is a plain error, both in the name Bashir and in the false implication that he narrated from Abdullah bin Amr and that Dawud bin Shabur narrated from him. In fact, Sufyan bin Uyayna narrated from two teachers, Dawud and Bashir, both of them from Mujahid. For this reason we have added "from Mujahid" from L and M, which is the correct reading, as indicated by the biographical entries of the narrators and by the sourcing of the hadith. In L and M it reads "Bashir bin Ismail," which is an error in the word "bin," the correct reading being "Abu," since there is no narrator among the transmitters named Bashir bin Ismail. This hadith is rather the narration of Bashir Abu Ismail from Mujahid, as we will mention in its sourcing.Bukhari narrated this hadith in Adab al-Mufrad (p. 19) from Muhammad bin Salam, from Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Dawud bin Shabur and Abu Ismail, from Mujahid, at length, with a story at its beginning. He also narrated it with a similar meaning (p. 22) from Abu Naeem, who said, Bashir bin Salman narrated to us from Mujahid, though a printing error occurred in it, "Bashir bin Sulayman," which is a clear corruption. These two narrations are decisive proof that the hadith here is from Dawud bin Shabur and Bashir Abu Ismail, both of them from Mujahid.Tirmidhi narrated it, 3:128, by way of Ibn Uyayna, from Dawud bin Shabur and Bashir Abu Ismail, from Mujahid, also at length, and said, "A hasan gharib hadith from this route." This hadith has also been narrated from Mujahid, from Ayesha and from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ.Abu Dawud narrated it, 5152, 4:504, from Awn (Mabud), likewise at length, by way of Ibn Uyayna, from Bashir Abu Ismail, from Mujahid. Munziri mentioned it in Targhib wal-Tarhib, 3:238, and said, "This text has been narrated through many routes, and from a group of the companions." It has already appeared from the hadith of Abdullah bin Umar bin Khattab at 5577.Ibn Kathir mentioned it in his Tafsir, 2:442, citing this same source, then attributed it to Tirmidhi and quoted his statement. However, in Ibn Kathir, both in the manuscripts and the printed edition, it appears as "from Abdullah bin Umar," which is a plain error, most likely attributable to the copyists.
