I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Wrongdoing will be layers of darkness on the Day of Resurrection. Beware of obscene speech, for Allah loves neither obscenity nor obscene talk. Beware of greed, for greed destroyed those who came before you. It commanded them to sever ties, so they severed them. It commanded them to be stingy, so they were stingy. It commanded them to commit sins, so they sinned."A man stood up and asked, "Messenger of Allah, which form of Islam is best?"He replied, "That the Muslims be safe from your tongue and your hand."Then that same man, or another, stood and asked, "Messenger of Allah, which migration is best?"He replied, "That you forsake what your Lord dislikes. Migration is of two kinds, the migration of the settled person and the migration of the desert dweller. The migration of the desert dweller is that he responds when summoned and obeys when commanded. The settled person faces the greater trial of the two and earns the greater reward."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Amr bin Mura and Abdullah bin Harith, their reliability was already established at 1997. Abu Kathir Zubaydi, with the dammah on the zay, is a reliable successor. Ajli and others confirmed his reliability. There is disagreement about his name, and the more likely view is that his name is Harith bin Jahman, which is what Bukhari favored in al-Kabir 1/2/264, where he entered him under the name Harith bin Jahman, Abu Kathir Zubaydi. It has also been said that his name is Zuhayr bin Aqmar, and Bukhari alluded to this in the entry on Zuhayr 2/1/391. Jahman has a dammah on the jim, followed by a silent ha, then a mim. This hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud Tayalisi at 2272, from Shuba and Masudi, from Amr bin Mura, with this same chain, in a longer form than what appears here. I have not found it in its longer form except in these two musnads, Musnad Ahmad and Musnad Tayalisi. It will also come later through the narration of Waki from Masudi at 6792, and through the narration of Muhammad bin Jafar from Shuba at 6837.Abu Dawud Sijistani narrated part of it, the prohibition against stinginess and its effect in producing miserliness, severing of ties, and immoral conduct, through the route of Shuba at 1698 (2:61 of Awn al-Mabud). Munziri said at 1627 that Nasai also recorded it. That is what Munziri said, but what appears in Nasai from it begins with his statement, "which migration is best." He recorded it at 2:182 through the route of Muhammad bin Jafar from Shuba.Hakim also narrated part of it at 1:415, through the route of Tayalisi and Wahb bin Jareer, from Shuba. He said, "The hadith is sahih in its chain of transmission, though the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it, and Abu Kathir Zubaydi is among the senior successors." Dhahabi agreed with him. See also 6446.Ibn Kathir mentioned in his tafsir at 2:447 the prohibition against stinginess from this hadith, without giving its sourcing.
