Ati reported, I went out to Ibn Umar and asked, "What is the prayer of a traveler?"He replied, "Two units, two units, except for the Maghrib prayer, which is three."I said, "What if we are at Dhu al-Majaz?"He asked, "What is Dhu al-Majaz?"I said, "A place where we gather, trade, and remain for twenty nights or fifteen nights."He said, "My good man, I was in Adharbayjan," and I am not sure whether he said for four months or two, "and I saw them praying it two units, two units. And I saw the Prophet of Allah ﷺ with my own eyes praying it as two units." Then he recited to me this verse, "There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example" [Ahzab 33:21].
حدثنا محمد بن بكر أخبرنا يحيى بن قيس المأربي
خرجت إلى ابن عمر فقلت ما صلاة المسافر قال ركعتين ركعتين إلا صلاة المغرب ثلاثا قلت أرأيت إن كنا بذي المجاز قال ما ذو المجاز قلت مكان نجتمع فيه ونبيع فيه ونمكث عشرين ليلة أو خمس عشرة ليلة فقال يا أيها الرجل كنت بأذربيجان لا أدري قال أربعة أشهر أو شهرين فرأيتهم يصلونها ركعتين ركعتين ورأيت نبي الله ﷺ بصر عيني يصليها ركعتين ثم نزع إلي بهذه الآية {لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة}
