The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed ten people: the one who consumes usury, the one who pays it, the one who records it, its two witnesses, the one who arranges a marriage to make a divorced wife lawful again for her former husband, the one for whom this is done, the one who withholds charity, the woman who tattoos, and the woman who has herself tattooed.

Its isnad is daif, due to the weakness of Harith Awar. Amir is Shaybi.Al-hal is the active participle from the trilateral root halla, and here it is used transitively. One says, "I made his wife hal for so-and-so," meaning I made her lawful for him, so I am hal and she is mahlul for him. It can also be used intransitively, as is well known, and it is made transitive by adding a hamzah or by doubling the middle letter, so one says ahalla or hallala. See al-Faiq and al-Nihayah.Ibn Athir mentioned another view, that the meaning of hal is "one possessing ihlal," similar to the expression "reeh laqih," meaning "a wind possessing fertilization." And al-muhallal lahu comes from the quadrilateral form made transitive by doubling. Thus both the trilateral and quadrilateral forms were used together in a single hadith.The term al-hal will come again at 980.
