Umar bin Khattab saw Utarid selling a garment of silk brocade, so he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I saw Utarid selling a garment of silk brocade. If only you would buy it and wear it for receiving delegations, for the Eid, and for Friday."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Silk is worn only by one who has no share," and I think he said, "in the Hereafter."Later, garments of striped silk were gifted to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gave one to Ali bin Abu Talib, one to Usama bin Zayd, and sent one to Umar bin Khattab. He said to Ali, "Cut it up into headscarves for the women."Umar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I heard you say what you said about it, and then you sent me one."He replied, "I did not send it to you to wear, but to sell."As for Usama, he wore his and went out in it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept looking at him. When Usama saw him fixing his gaze on him, he said, "Messenger of Allah, you yourself clothed me in it."He said, "Cut it up into headscarves for the women," or something like what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said.
حدثنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا معمر عن أيوب عن نافع
أن عمر بن الخطاب رأى عطاردا يبيع حلة من ديباج فأتى رسول الله ﷺ فقال يا رسول الله إني رأيت عطاردا يبيع حلة من ديباج فلو اشتريتها فلبستها للوفود وللعيد وللجمعة فقال إنما يلبس الحرير من لا خلاق له حسبته قال في الآخرة قال ثم أهدي لرسول الله ﷺ حلل من سيراء حرير فأعطى علي بن أبي طالب حلة وأعطى أسامة بن زيد حلة وبعث إلى عمر بن الخطاب بحلة وقال لعلي شققها بين النساء خمرا وجاء عمر إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقال يا رسول الله سمعتك قلت فيها ما قلت ثم أرسلت إلي بحلة فقال إني لم أرسلها إليك لتلبسها ولكن لتبيعها فأما أسامة فلبسها فراح فيها فجعل رسول الله ﷺ ينظر إليه فلما رأى أسامة يحدد إليه الطرف قال يا رسول الله كسوتنيها قال شققها بين النساء خمرا أو كالذي قال رسول الله ﷺ
Its isnad is sahih. Muslim related it similarly, 1:150–151, from Jareer bin Hazim, from Nafi. Something similar to this has already passed, at length and in brief, several times, including at 4713, 4978, 4979, 5095, 5545, 5797, 5951, 5952, and see also 6105.The waw in his saying "and for the delegations" is not mentioned in H, and we have added it from K and M. As for his saying, "So when he saw Usamah stretching his gaze toward him," and so on, this is how it appears in the three source manuscripts, and what is meant is "so when he saw him," with the pronoun omitted. It has been added between the lines in K, but we did not permit ourselves to include it, for fear that it might be an alteration made by a copyist or a reader. As for his saying "stretching toward him," in a marginal copy of M it reads "upon him" instead of "toward him," and I do not think that reading is correct except with some forcing and strain.
