Some people from Kufa came to Uthman and informed him about what Walid had done, namely that he had been drinking wine. Ali spoke to Uthman about it, and Uthman said, "Here is your cousin. Carry out the prescribed punishment on him."Ali said, "Hasan, get up and flog him."Hasan replied, "You have nothing to do with this. Assign it to someone other than me."Ali said, "Rather, you have grown weak, feeble, and incapable. Get up, Abdullah bin Jafar."So Abdullah began flogging him while Ali counted, until he reached forty. Then Ali said, "Stop," or he said, "Hold back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ flogged forty lashes, Abu Bakr flogged forty, and Umar completed it at eighty, and all of them are sunnah."
Its isnad is sahih. Abdullah al-Dannaj is Abdullah bin Firuz Basri, whose nickname was Dannaj, with fatha on the dal and the nun, ending in a jim.Hudayn Abu Sasan, that is, Hudayn with damma on the undotted ha and fatha on the dotted dad, bin Munzir bin Harith bin Wala Raqashi, whose kunya was Abu Sasan. He was a trustworthy successor.Abu Ahmad Askari said, "He was Ali's standard-bearer on the day of Siffin, and Ali then appointed him governor of Istakhr. He was one of the chiefs of Rabia. I do not know of anyone named Hudayn with the dad other than him and those of his descendants named after him."He has a remarkable story in Kamil by Mubarrad, in our edition, pages 718 to 721.In manuscript Ha it reads "Husayn bin Sasan," which is an error. We corrected it based on manuscripts Kaf and Ha.This hadith was narrated by Muslim at greater length than this, 2:38-39, through the route of Saeed bin Abu Aruba and Abdul-Aziz bin Mukhtar, from Dannaj.See 1184, and it will come again at greater length at 1229.
