I said, "Messenger of Allah, why is it that you choose carefully from among the women of Quraysh and leave us aside?"He said, "Do you have someone in mind?"I replied, "Yes, the daughter of Hamza."He said, "She is not lawful for me. She is the daughter of my brother through breastfeeding."
Its isnad is sahih. Saad bin Ubayda Sulami was a trustworthy Tabii, and he was the husband of the daughter of Abu Abdul-Rahman Sulami. In copies of the Musnad it appears as Saeed bin Ubayda, which is an error. Abu Abdul-Rahman Sulami's name was Abdullah bin Habib.Tatuq means tatallaq (he glitters, shines). In the Lisan it says, "al-tawq in his affairs" means he devoted himself entirely and exerted the utmost effort, similar to taannaqa fih (he was meticulous about it). It also states, citing Layth, "tanawwaqa fulanun fi mantiqihi wa malbasihi wa umoorihi" (so-and-so was meticulous in his speech, dress, and affairs), meaning he refined himself and went to great lengths, and tanayyaqa is another dialectal form of the same word. It also states, "taannaqa fulanun fil-rawda" (so-and-so delighted in the meadow), meaning he settled in it, admiring it. And it cites from the Tahdhib, "I settled in soft meadows, delighting in them (ataannaqu fihinna)." Abu Ubayd said, regarding the phrase "ataannaqu fihinna", it means "I seek out their beauties and am charmed by them." This, then, is the meaning, namely that he was delighted by the women of Quraysh and would choose his wives from among them, and that he professed affection for Banu Hashim yet had never married into them. That is why Ali offered him the daughter of his uncle Hamza bin Abdul-Muttalib.Hamza was the brother of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ through breastfeeding, for both were nursed by Thuwayba, the freedwoman of Abu Lahab, as is established in Sahihayn. He was older than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ by two years or by four. This hadith was narrated by Muslim, 1:413, through Abu Muawiya and others, from Amash. It was also narrated by Abu Dawud and Nasai, as noted in Dhakhair al-Mawarith, 5505. It will come again at 770, 931, and 1038.
