Its isnad is sahih. Humayd bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf Zuhri, we have already pointed to his reliability at . He was a trustworthy successor (tabii) who narrated many hadiths. He died in the year 95 at the age of 73, which means he was born around the year 22. Some narrators erred by narrating a report suggesting that he had seen Umar bin Khattab, while Malik narrated the same report without mentioning that he had seen him.Ibn Saad said in Tabaqat 5:114–115, Muhammad bin Umar (that is, Waqidi) said, "The most reliable account with us is Malik's hadith, that Humayd never saw Umar and never heard anything from him, and his age and the date of his death indicate this. He may have heard from Uthman, since Uthman was his maternal uncle, and he used to visit him just as his own children did, whether young or old."Then Ibn Saad said, "I have heard someone claim that he died in the year 105, but this is a mistake and an error. That cannot be correct, neither in terms of his age nor in terms of his narrations. The year 95 is closer to the truth and more likely to be correct."Bukhari gave his biography in Kabir 2/1/343 and stated definitively that he heard from Uthman, and mentioned him in Saghir, p. 111, in the section on those who died between the years 90 and 100. Likewise, Dhahabi stated definitively in Tarikh Islam 3:36 that he died in the year 95, and that the claim he died in 105 is a mistake. Ibn Kathir likewise mentioned him in Tarikh 9:140 among those who died in the year 95.This hadith is repeated at 6969 and 6970 with the same meaning.
