The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Envy is only proper toward two kinds of people," or as Allah willed him to say, "a man whom Allah has given the Quran and who recites it throughout the hours of the night and day, and a man whom Allah has given wealth and who spends it."
حدثنا علي بن عياش حدثنا إسماعيل بن عياش حدثني يحيى بن سعيد أخبرني صالح بن كيسان أن إسماعيل بن محمد أخبره أن نافعا أخبره
عن رسول الله ﷺ أنه قال إنما يحسد من يحسد أو كما شاء الله أن يقول على خصلتين رجل أعطاه الله تعالى القرآن فهو يقوم به آناء الليل والنهار ورجل أعطاه الله مالا فهو ينفقه
Its isnad is sahih. Ismail bin Ayyash narrates from Salih bin Kaysan directly, as has already occurred in 6163 and 6164, but here he narrated from him through an intermediary, Yahya bin Saeed Qattan. As for Ismail bin Muhammad bin Saad bin Abu Waqqas, his reliability was already established at 1443, and we add here that Bukhari included his biography in Tarikh al-Kabir 1/1/371. The hadith has already occurred with similar meaning through the route of Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, at 4550, 4924, and 5618.Regarding his saying, "the only one who is envied is he who is envied," in a copy in the margin of manuscript M, "envy" appears instead of the second occurrence of "is envied." Regarding his saying, "Allah gave him the Quran," in manuscript K it reads "granted him," which is also found in a copy in the margin of manuscript M. Regarding his saying, "in the hours of the night and the day," in a copy in the margin of manuscripts K and M, it reads "and the hours of the day."
