The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Were it not that I would burden my community, I would have commanded them to use the siwak before every prayer."
حدثنا عبد الله حدثني عقبة بن مكرم الكوفي حدثنا يونس بن بكير حدثنا محمد بن إسحاق عن سعيد بن أبي سعيد المقبري عن أبي هريرة وعن عبيد الله بن أبي رافع عن أبيه
قال رسول الله ﷺ لولا أن أشق على أمتي لأمرتهم بالسواك عند كل صلاة
Its isnad is sahih. In reality it comprises two chains. Ibn Ishaq narrated it from Saeed Maqburi from Abu Hurairah, and from Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi from his father from Ali. In manuscript ح it reads "from Abu Hurairah, from Ubaydullah," with the connective "and" omitted, which is a clear error. We corrected it based on manuscript ه.Uqba bin Mukram Kufi is trustworthy. Yunus bin Bukayr Shaybani, the hadith master, is trustworthy, though some scholars weakened him without justification. The hadith is well known through many chains besides this one, and it will come again in the Musnad of Abu Hurairah several times, including number 7335.This hadith and the two before it are among the additions of Abdullah bin Ahmad. It will come with two chains, from Abu Hurairah (967) and from Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi from his father from Ali (968), at greater length than given here.
