A man came to Ibn Umar and said, "Ibn Umar, I want to ask you about something, will you answer me?"Ibn Umar replied, "Yes."The man then brought up Uthman.Ibn Umar said, "As for his absence from Badr, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was his wife and she was ill, so the Prophet ﷺ told him, 'You will have the reward of a man who witnessed Badr and his share of the spoils.' As for his absence from the pledge of Ridwan, if there had been anyone in Makkah more honored than Uthman, the Prophet would have sent him instead. But he sent Uthman, and the pledge of Ridwan took place after Uthman had already departed for Makkah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then raised his right hand and said, 'This is the hand of Uthman,' and struck it against his other hand, saying, 'This is on behalf of Uthman.'"Then Ibn Umar said to him, "Now take this answer with you."
Its isnad is sahih, and it is a shortened version of 5772. Tayalisi reported it in 1958, from Abu Awana and Shayban, that is Abu Muawiya, from Uthman bin Abdullah bin Mawhab, in a similar manner.Hakim also reported something similar to this story in Mustadrak 3:98, through the route of Kulayb bin Waail, from Habib bin Abu Mulayka, from Ibn Umar, and he said, "Its isnad is sahih, and the two of them did not report it." Dhahabi agreed with him.
