A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked, "Messenger of Allah, how often should a servant be pardoned?"The Prophet ﷺ remained silent. The man asked again, and he remained silent. The man asked a third time, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "He is to be pardoned seventy times each day."
حدثنا موسى يعني ابن داود حدثنا ابن لهيعة عن حميد بن هانئ عن عباس بن جليد الحجري
جاء رجل إلى النبي ﷺ فقال يا رسول الله كم يعفى عن المملوك قال فصمت عنه ثم أعاد فصمت عنه ثم أعاد فقال يعفى عنه كل يوم سبعين مرة
Its isnad is sahih. It has already appeared in similar form at 5635, from the narration of Saeed bin Abu Ayub, from Abu Hani, who is Humayd bin Hani, from Abbas Hujri, and we discussed it in detail there, and pointed out the narration of Abu Dawud 4:506–507 through Ibn Wahb from Abu Hani. This narration is closer in wording to Abu Dawud's narration.We mentioned there the quotation in Tahdhib from Abu Hatim saying, "I do not know that Abbas bin Julayd heard from Abdullah bin Umar." We commented on this by saying that we did not find it in Kitab Jarh wa Tadil.We correct this here, noting that it is confirmed in Kitab Marasil by Ibn Abu Hatim, p. 60, where he said, "I heard my father say, 'I do not know that Abbas bin Julayd Hujri heard anything from Ibn Umar.'"This does no harm, as we said there, for their being contemporaries is established, and that is sufficient for connection, not to mention that Abbas explicitly stated that he heard from Ibn Umar, as in the narration of Abu Dawud.
