He was sitting with Ibn Umar in the marketplace, and Salama bin Azraq was beside him, when a funeral procession passed by accompanied by the sound of weeping.Abdullah bin Umar said, "If the family of this deceased person had refrained from weeping, it would have been better for their dead."Salama bin Azraq asked, "Do you really say that, Abu Abdul-Rahman?"He replied, "Yes, I say it."Salama said, "I heard Abu Hurairah say that when someone from Marwan's household died, the women gathered to weep over him. Marwan said, 'Get up, Abdul-Malik, and forbid them from weeping.'Abu Hurairah said, 'Leave them be. Someone from the family of the Prophet ﷺ once died, and the women gathered to weep over him. Umar bin Khattab stood up to forbid them and drive them away. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave them, Ibn Khattab, for the eye sheds tears, the heart is stricken with grief, and the loss is recent."'"Ibn Umar asked, "You heard this from Abu Hurairah yourself?"He replied, "Yes."Ibn Umar asked, "He attributed it to the Prophet ﷺ?"He replied, "Yes."Ibn Umar said, "Then Allah and His Messenger know best."
حدثنا سليمان بن داود أخبرنا إسماعيل أخبرني محمد بن عمرو بن حلحلة
أنه كان جالسا مع ابن عمر بالسوق ومعه سلمة بن الأزرق إلى جنبه فمر بجنازة يتبعها بكاء فقال عبد الله بن عمر لو ترك أهل هذا الميت البكاء لكان خيرا لميتهم فقال سلمة بن الأزرق تقول ذلك يا أبا عبد الرحمن قال نعم أقوله قال إني سمعت أبا هريرة ومات ميت من أهل مروان فاجتمع النساء يبكين عليه فقال مروان قم يا عبد الملك فانههن أن يبكين فقال أبو هريرة دعهن فإنه مات ميت من آل النبي ﷺ فاجتمع النساء يبكين عليه فقام عمر بن الخطاب ينهاهن ويطردهن فقال رسول الله ﷺ دعهن يا ابن الخطاب فإن العين دامعة والفؤاد مصاب وإن العهد حديث فقال ابن عمر أنت سمعت هذا من أبي هريرة قال نعم قال يأثره عن النبي ﷺ قال نعم قال فالله ورسوله أعلم
