Some men said to Ibn Umar, "We have people among us who claim that everything is in their own hands, that if they wish they act, and if they wish they refrain."Ibn Umar replied, "Tell them that I disown them and they disown me."Then he said, Jibreel ﷺ came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Muhammad, what is Islam?"He answered, "That you worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, establish the prayer, give the zakat, fast Ramadan, and make pilgrimage to the House."Jibreel asked, "If I do that, am I a Muslim?"He said, "Yes."Jibreel said, "You have spoken the truth."Then he asked, "What is ihsan?"He answered, "That you fear Allah the Exalted as though you see Him, for though you do not see Him, He sees you."Jibreel asked, "If I do that, am I one who has ihsan?"He said, "Yes."Jibreel said, "You have spoken the truth."Then he asked, "What is iman?"He answered, "That you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the resurrection after death, Paradise and the Fire, and in divine decree, all of it."Jibreel asked, "If I do that, am I a believer?"He said, "Yes."Jibreel said, "You have spoken the truth."
Its isnad is sahih. Ali bin Yazid is Ibn Jadan. The hadith is one of the mursal narrations of the companions, for Ibn Umar only related it from his father Umar, and this has already appeared in his musnad in a similar longer form at 184, 367, 368. Its meaning has also already appeared in a longer form in the musnad of Umar at 374, 375, but there it was made a hadith of Ibn Umar, as though he himself had witnessed the questions of Jibreel. We concluded there that it is actually a hadith of Umar, and that making it a hadith of Ibn Umar was a mistake. Its meaning has likewise already appeared as a hadith of Ibn Abbas at 2926m.His saying, "For if you do not see him," appears in one copy in the margin of م as "takun."
