Its isnad is daif. Baqiya bin Walid, his reliability was already established at 887, and it was noted that he practices tadlis. Here he did not explicitly state that he heard directly from his shaykh.Uthman bin Zafar Juhani Shami is trustworthy. Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators, and Ibn Abu Hatim gave his biography in Jarh wa Tadil 3/1/150 without mentioning any criticism of him. In Tahdhib it states that Baqiya heard from him around the year 128.As for Hashim, Hafiz Ibn Hajar quoted in Taajil 428, from Husayni, that he said, "I do not know him," then he mentioned this hadith among his narrations. Likewise, Haythami quoted this hadith in Majma al-Zawaid 10:292, and said, "Ahmad narrated it through the route of Hashim from Ibn Umar, and I do not know Hashim, though the rest of its narrators have been declared trustworthy, except that Baqiya, meaning Baqiya bin Walid, practices tadlis."Suyuti also mentioned it in Jami Saghir 8444, and its commentator Munawi said, "Dhahabi said, 'No one knows who Hashim is.' Hafiz Iraqi said, 'Its chain is extremely daif.'" Ahmad said, "This hadith amounts to nothing." Then he quoted the statement of Haythami. Then he said, "Ibn Abdul-Hadi said, 'Ahmad narrated it in the Musnad, and declared it daif in Ilal.'"Then I found the hadith in Tarikh Baghdad by Khatib, 14:21-22, through three chains, all of them centering on Baqiya bin Walid. One chain is from Maslama Juhani, "Hashim Awqas told me, he said, I heard Ibn Umar." Another is Baqiya bin Walid, "Yazid bin Abdullah Juhani told us, from Abu Jauna, from Hashim Awqas, he said, I heard Ibn Umar." And another is Baqiya, from Jauna, from Hashim Awqas, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar. These are obscure chains, containing narrators for whom I found no biography.If it is confirmed that this Hashim is indeed Hashim Awqas, then he is daif. He has a biography in Lisan Mizan 6:183-184, "Hashim bin Awqas, Bukhari said, 'Not trustworthy.'" He is also in the book of Ibn Adi, "Hashim Awqas." End of entry. I say, the speaker being Ibn Hajar, "Bukhari's statement about him was quoted through Dulabi, then through Ibn Adi."Hafiz Ibn Hajar was correct in identifying the source of this quotation attributed to Bukhari, for Bukhari did not give him a biography in Tarikh al-Kabir, nor in Tarikh Saghir, nor in Duafa. Whatever the case, he is a person entirely unknown, both in identity and in circumstance.
