Ibn Umar gathered his sons when the people of Madinah rose up with Ibn Zubayr and renounced their allegiance to Yazid bin Muawiya. He said, "We have given this man our pledge of allegiance under the covenant of Allah and His Messenger, and I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'A banner will be raised for the treacherous one on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be announced, This is the treachery of so-and-so.' Among the gravest acts of treachery, second only to associating partners with Allah the Exalted, is for a man to pledge allegiance to another under the covenant of Allah and His Messenger, then to break that pledge. So let none of you renounce allegiance to Yazid, and let none of you go to extremes in this matter, lest it become a final break between me and you."

أن ابن عمر جمع بنيه حين انتزى أهل المدينة مع ابن الزبير وخلعوا يزيد بن معاوية فقال إنا قد بايعنا هذا الرجل ببيع الله ورسوله وإني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول الغادر ينصب له لواء يوم القيامة فيقال هذه غدرة فلان وإن من أعظم الغدر إلا أن يكون الإشراك بالله تعالى أن يبايع الرجل رجلا على بيع الله ورسوله ثم ينكث بيعته فلا يخلعن أحد منكم يزيد ولا يسرفن أحد منكم في هذا الأمر فيكون صيلما فيما بيني وبينكم
