I had a particular time before dawn when I would come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If he was standing in prayer, he would say "Subhan Allah," and that was his permission for me to enter. If he was not praying, he would grant me permission verbally.

Its chain is daif. Abdullah bin Nujay, with the diminutive form, bin Salama Hadrami is trustworthy, deemed trustworthy by Nasai and Ibn Hibban, but he did not hear from Ali. Between him and Ali was his father, as Ibn Main affirmed, so this is a broken chain.Nasai related it, 1/178, through Mughira from Harith Ukli in similar wording, but it contains the mention of clearing the throat, and the chapter heading concerns clearing the throat during prayer. Ibn Majah also related it likewise, 2/208.Nasai also related it after that through Shurahbil bin Mudrak, who is trustworthy, from Abdullah bin Nujay from his father, who said, "Ali said to me..."
