I was present with Uthman on the day he was besieged, at the place where funerals were held. The crowd was so dense that if a stone had been thrown, it would have landed only on someone's head. I saw Uthman
looking out from the small window adjacent to the standing-place of Jibreel
.He said, "People, is Talha among you?"They were silent. Then he said, "People, is Talha among you?"They were silent. Then he said, "People, is Talha among you?"Talha bin Ubaydullah stood up, and Uthman
said to him, "I never expected to see you here. I never thought you would be in a gathering where you heard me call out three times and not answer. I ask you by Allah, Talha, do you remember the day when you and I were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in such-and-such a place, with no one from his companions present besides you and me?"He said, "Yes."He continued, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to you, 'Talha, there is no prophet who does not have with him a companion from his nation accompanying him in Paradise, and this Uthman bin Affan' meaning me 'is my companion with me in Paradise.'"Talha said, "By Allah, yes."Then he turned away.
Its isnad is daif. Qasim bin Hakam bin Aws Ansari, Abu Hatim said, "Unknown." Dhahabi said in Mizan, "His status is likely one of truthfulness." Abu Abadah Zarqi, whose name is Isa bin Abdul-Rahman bin Farwah, Abu Hatim said, "His hadith is munkar, his hadith is daif, he resembles one whose narrations are matruk," from Jarh wal-Tadil 13/1/280. Nasai, Ibn Hibban, and others declared him daif. The hadith is among the additions of Abdullah, and it appears in Majma al-Zawaid 7/227, 228 and 9/91, where it is stated, "Abdullah narrated it, and it contains Abu Abadah Zarqi, who is matruk." Abu Yaala narrated it in Kabir and omitted Abu Abadah from the chain, and it is mentioned that Nasai narrated part of it with a disconnected isnad.Hakim narrated it in Mustadrak 3/97-98 and said, "Its isnad is sahih, though the two of them did not include it." Dhahabi took issue with this, noting that regarding Qasim bin Hakam, Bukhari said, "His hadith is not sahih," and that Abu Hatim considered him unknown. This is astonishing of him. He forgot that he himself had said in Mizan, "His status is one of truthfulness," and he abridged Bukhari's statement, for Bukhari actually said, as recorded in Tahdhib, "He heard from Abu Abadah, and the hadith of Abu Abadah is not sahih." So by this, Bukhari was weakening Abu Abadah, not Qasim. Then Dhahabi forgot that the defect of the hadith lies in the weakness of Abu Abadah Zarqi, as we have explained. Praise be to Allah.
