Abdullah bin Umar used to say, "We called him nothing but Zayd bin Muhammad, until the Quran was revealed: 'Call them by the names of their fathers, that is more just in the sight of Allah' [Ahzab 33:5]."
حدثنا عفان حدثنا وهيب حدثني موسى بن عقبة حدثني سالم عن عبد الله بن عمر
أن عبد الله بن عمر كان يقول ما كنا ندعوه إلا زيد بن محمد حتى نزل القرآن {ادعوهم لآبائهم هو أقسط عند الله}
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Kathir cited it in his tafsir 6:500 from Sahih Bukhari through the route of Musa bin Uqba. He said, Muslim, Tirmidhi, and Nasai also reported it through various routes from Musa bin Uqba.Suyuti also attributed it in Durr Manthur 5:181 to Ibn Abu Shayba, Ibn Munzir, Ibn Abu Hatim, Ibn Mardawayh, and Bayhaqi.The phrase in this isnad "from Zayd bin Haritha" is not meant in its apparent sense, as is clear, for it is not actually narrated from Zayd himself. Rather, what is meant is "concerning the story of Zayd bin Haritha."
