Ibn Umar was asked about fasting on the Day of Arafah. He replied, "The Prophet ﷺ did not fast it, nor did Abu Bakr, nor Umar, nor Uthman."
حدثنا مؤمل حدثنا سفيان عن إسماعيل بن أمية
سئل ابن عمر عن صوم يوم عرفة فقال لم يصمه النبي ﷺ ولا أبو بكر ولا عمر ولا عثمان
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It is an abridgment of 5411. At the end of the hadith in H, in the mention of the day of Arafah, after his words "nor Uthman," there is an addition with no clear meaning. It is not found in K or M, so we removed it. It is actually established in the following chain, as we will mention.5411m - [Waki narrated to us from Sufyan, from Ismail bin Umaya, from a man, from Ibn Umar, who said, "The Prophet ﷺ did not fast it, nor did Abu Bakr, nor Umar, nor Uthman, [meaning] the day of Arafah."] Sahih(5411m) Its chain of transmission is sahih, even though it appears daif on the surface, due to the anonymity of the shaykh of Ismail bin Umaya who narrated it from Ibn Umar. Waki left him unnamed in this chain, but Muammal identified him in the preceding chain, 5411. This chain was not mentioned in H, but it is established in K and M. The phrase "the day of Arafah," which appeared in H in the preceding chain, is here the end of the hadith in this chain. Its being established in H is evidence that this repeated chain fell out by an oversight of the copyist or the printer. The word "[meaning]" in this hadith is established in K, and it is found in the margin copy of M, so we wrote it marked as an addition, to clarify what is established in the two copies.
