Its chain of transmission is sahih. Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Thawban was a trustworthy Follower, considered reliable by Ibn Saad, Abu Zura, and Nasai. Abu Hatim said, "He is one of the Followers, and one like him is not to be questioned about." Bukhari gave him a biographical entry in al-Kabir 1/1/145 and said, "He heard from Ibn Umar, Abu Saeed, Abu Hurairah, Zayd bin Thabit, and Muhammad bin Iyas."
